After many months of semi silence, Nintendo has finally released another Direct update!
With a dry Q3, there was a lot of anticipation for this, especially with heavy rumours and the recently closed Smash Ballot.
by George De Sausmarez
Satoru Shibata, the host of the European Nintendo Directs and President of Nintendo of Europe gives an introduction as a thank you for the outpouring of support for the untimely death of Nintendo's previous president Satoru Iwata before going straight into the announcements.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD
Rumours confirmed. The game has been remastered for the HD release and the footage of the game shows Link using the master sword in his left hand. This may sound like a very small thing to pick up on but it is pretty important. When the game was initially released around the Wii’s birth and the Gamecube's death, the whole game was mirrored for the Wii release so that the motion controls would work correctly even though the game remained un-mirrored on the Gamecube version. Therefore, the majority of people who played the game ended up with a mirrored experience and with the Gamecube game so rare and valuable nowadays, there was little chance of playing it the way it was designed. Also announced was a new Wolf Link Amiibo and tonne of special editions however, releases for both the game and the Amiibo will be on the 4th of March 2016.
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass and Spirit TracksThese were also getting a release onto the Nintendo eshop on 3DS straight away at £8.99 each or, if you buy one, you can get the second half price (£4.49) until the 19th of November.
Triforce Heroes free content
An extra area is being added to the game called the Den of Trials consisting of 30 levels instead of the usual 4 per area. But if that sounds like too much for you, have no fear, you are granted checkpoints along the way to save you from trudging through all the levels again. There are also 2 new outfits to be had; the Linebeck outfit letting you see inside treasure chests before opening them and the Fierce Deity Mail which ups your attack power. Another hint by Shibata suggests that there might be more content to come but we shall wait and see.
Hyrule Warriors Legends
After a greater success in the west than in Japan, Hyrule Warriors seemed to take over in Autumn 2014 with it’s massive amount of content and constant stream of DLC. For those who didn't have a WiiU, the wait is nearly over. On March 25th, the 3DS game gets released with some new surprises, mainly a crossbow wielding female Link OC called Linkle. The game will have a limited edition that comes with a pocket watch. Will it be an as big a success as the last one?
Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam Bros
The hybrid of the Mario and Luigi series with the Paper Mario series presumably to help jumpstart the Paper Mario series after it’s abysmal previous 3DS game Sticker Star. The premise is that Mario and Luigi get to travel through the world with their new chum Paper Mario and work together to complete the challenges set before them. There will be amiibo functionality with the Super Mario Series of amiibo which will provide “power-up cards” in game to help with the battles. It looks like they are going back to the RPG roots, with this one switching from exploring to turn based battles. The release date will be the 4th of December.
The update waves continue for Splatoon as it gets 2 new stages (Museum D’Alfonsino and Mahi Mahi Resort) as well as 40 new pieces of equipment.
Super Mario Maker Update
You will now be able to custom search for level types, not just on your console but while you are out and about too. It seems to have some connection to smart devices as they claim that you can search for levels wherever you are. This must work with either some kind of app or a browser site that connects to your WiiU and let’s you favourite courses to play later. I think the search function was necessary but I don’t really see why you’d want to search for them away from being on the actual game. You also can’t seem to search for creators which is disappointing, but maybe we’ll see it in the next update. This one is planned to be out in December this year.
Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow
Looks like Nintendo has finally broken to the genwunners. The games are being re-released with minimal changes so that you can experience your childhood all over again! Same graphics, same music but you can still trade with another of the downloaded copies by wireless connection so you can still obtain all 150 original Pokemon in all their 8-bit glory (Mew still uncertain). Re live this game with all its silly glitches and hax pokemon moves on February 27th, only on the Nintendo 3DS eshop.
A beat-em up Pokemon game has finally found its way down to the world after being a Japan only arcade game since July 2015. Made in collaboration with the Tekken team from Bandai Namco, this WiiU game should definitely be polished (at least, I’d hope so). They are also introducing a new Pokemon called Shadow Mewtwo but not a lot is known about this new form of Mewtwo. We’ll have to sit on our thumbs till later to find out more. A pre-order bonus with this game will be a Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card, letting you have quick access to use it in battle. The game is being pitched for release in Spring 2016.
Fire Emblem Fates
Like a phoenix from the ashes, Fire Emblem Awakening took the world by storm back in early 2013 selling extremely well worldwide and attaining high praise from reviewers, saving the series from cancellation. Now its successor will step up to the mark to carry on the legacy of this newly revitalised series. The new title will come out as 2 different versions; Birthright and Conquest with a 3rd downloadable campaign showing another side of the story called Revelation. If you buy one, you will be able to get the other for a reduced price from the eshop or you can buy them all in a bundle and get a free artbook thrown in. There was no date confirmed in the video but hopefully it’ll be about 2 months after the US release like with Awakening. It’s being released stateside on February the 19th. My fingers are crossed!
The last announcement came from nowhere!
Cloud to join roster in Super Smash Bros 4
Completely out of left field most would say, but a clever choice none the less by Nintendo. Cloud from the iconic Final Fantasy 7 is joining the Smash crew with plenty of powerful moves at his disposal along with a new stage. More to be announced later on, I’m sure!
There will also be a special Smash Bros announcement in December which may reveal the winner of the Smash Ballot. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for it!
There are other updates below with little bits of information for the superfans!
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash/ Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival/ New Style Boutique 2
Some short little sections with the gameplay trailers of each of these games that are coming out on November 20th.
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Just a trailer from this one, but it’s still pretty close to release date so I don’t think they wanted to give too much away. The title hits the shelves and the WiiU eshop December 4th.
Nintendo Badge Arcade
This little game is based off of the “crane” games that you’d normally find in an arcade (with no one on it because everyone knows they are completely rigged) but you can earn badges for you to customise your 3DS home screen. It doesn’t seem to be much more than that but I’m sure completionists will have a good time with it. It’s available on the eshop right now for free so you can always give it a go for no cost!
A minesweeper style game with a pokemon theme. Looks like a nice little game to play while on your journeys and you just want to avoid eye contact with that strange fellow over on the other side of the tube. Available in early December.
Final Fantasy Explorers
A mix of Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter and MMO games, this title lets you team up with friends to explore a new land. Characters can have a class and a job to get certain skills and builds. There is also a mechanic that lets you play as previous famous characters from older games in the series called Trance. Free DLC is also being given with the game that Japan had to pay for (take what one can get right?!) It comes to store with an optional collector's edition on the 29th of January.
Megaman Legacy Collection
A compilation of the first 6 Megaman games with an added in challenge mode to test the veterans of the Megaman world. More stages can also be unlocked using the Megaman amiibo. Museum mode opens up original designs and artworks as well as a hundred exclusive items to the 3DS version to entice the Megaman lover in you! It’s an eshop exclusive available from the 23rd of February.
What do you think is the most exciting thing announced? Apart from Cloud. Obviously.
